Newt's fate tied to Obama The better Newt does, the more Obama wins Link Obama's likelihood of reelection has soared in the last few days to 56.8 percent, the highest since July. This movement correlates with Newt's increased likelihood of gaining the nomination, now at 29.7 percent. This upward trend also correlates with Romney's likelihood of winning the presidency if he wins the nomination, now at 44.0, down from about 48 percent. We utilize prediction market data for these likelihoods. So, Obama was always beating Romney and now he's beating him even more badly. If Obama wants to be re-elected, the job is his. If he chooses to sit out the race, he could lose it by default. Subject: Common Dreams Bart, this notice appeared recently in the online mag Common Dreams. An article by Matt Taibbi, it appeared in the comments section of the piece. It attributes both you and me. Your page, my joke. No residuals perhaps, but at least they attributed us! The commentator was listed as "RSJ." "I sympathize, swansong, I've tried calmly arguing with Teabaggers and Christopublicans before, but so much sheer stupidity and ignorance just drives me up a wall. Unfortunately, some of them will never change even if the roof caves in on them -- it'll still be the fault of the goddamned liberals-progressives-commies-socialists whatever the evidence to the contrary. I think this joke sums up the current situation:" "A union worker, a Teabagger and a corporate CEO are sitting at a table. In the middle of the table there is a plate with a dozen cookies on it. "The CEO reaches across and takes 11 cookies, looks at the Tea Partier and says: 'Look out for that union guy, he wants a piece of your cookie.' Why Rethugs hate Willard ...because he has more money than they do? Link The number of Americans who hate Willard Romney skyrockets in January. What gives? "The main reason the Republican establishment overwhelmingly favors Romney over Gingrich is that Romney stands a better chance of beating Barack Obama," says Jonathan Chait at New York. So it's a problem for Romney that "as the campaign goes on, this seems to be growing less true." A new poll shows that negative views of Romney have "spiked" over the past two weeks, from a net +4 favorability rating (39 positive/34 negative) to a -18 rating (31 positive/49 negative) — very similar to Gingrich's -22 rating (29/51). The shift is most notable among independents, who went from generally liking Romney (41/34) to disliking him by a 2-to-1 margin (23/51). Democrats (21/62) and Republicans (58/32) have soured on Mitt, too. What's behind Romney's newfound unpopularity? Here, seven theories: Send e-mail to Bart Marty

Meet Newt's billionaire pals Link Before Newt Gingrich dominated the South Carolina primary, a super PAC spent millions savaging Romney. A driving force behind that super PAC is Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino tycoon who has translated his deep friendship with Gingrich into a financial bonanza to buoy his candidacy. Adelson gave the PAC $5 million just before the South Carolina primary, and this week, his wife gave the group another $5 million. The Adelsons make Mitt Romney look like Tom Joad. ha ha Adelson, the eighth-richest American, is worth more than $20 billion. He built the Venetian hotel (and another in Macao to match) and has given to a host of Jewish causes — in addition to funding a nonprofit group that led to Gingrich's presidential run. Adelson met Gingrich when he was the speaker of the House, and they bonded over their insanity about Israel Since then they've been friends, with obvious benefits. What does that mean? Is Newt blowing Adelson for $5 billion a pop?

What did Newt promise Adelson? by Robert Reich
Link Sheldon Adelson is now the poster boy for what's terribly wrong with campaign finance. Adelson donated $5 million to Gingrich for negative ads against Romney in South Carolina. Adelson has done it again. He and his wife Marian have cut another $5 million check for Gingrich to go negative on Romney in Florida. The money won't go as far as it did in South Carolina - TV ads cost a lot more in Florida - but it's enough to give the Grinch a solid footing. And, who knows? The Adelsons are billionaires. They might decide to put in another $5 million or perhaps $20 million into Gingrich's Super Pac. The point is, there's no limit. Do you know who Sheldon and Marian Adelson are? Do you know what Gingrich has promised them, or what they'll get from President Grinch? I don't. But if Newt becomes President of the United States, they'll be singularly responsible. And we better find out, because Newt will owe them big time. If someone is pulling in 50 million on investment income, they can darn well pay a decent 35 or 50 percent. Janet Send e-mail to Bart Thanks, they send me

US/Israel: Iran NOT Building Nukes
by Ray McGovern consortiumnews.com Recent comments by U.S and Israeli military leaders indicate that the intelligence services of the two countries agree that Iran has not decided to build a nuclear bomb, a crack in the Western narrative that the U.S. press corps won’t accept, as ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern explains. We've only just started and already I have a headache. Has Iran decided to build a nuclear bomb? That would seem to be the central question in the current bellicose debate over whether the world should simply cripple Iran’s economy and inflict severe pain on its civilian population or launch a preemptive war to destroy its nuclear capability while possibly achieving “regime change.” I don't believe his assertion that those are the two sides of this debate. What about the side that says we're not going to wear with Iran? And if you’ve been reading the New York Times or following the rest of the Fawning Corporate Media, you’d likely assume that everyone who matters agrees that the answer to the question is yes, although the FCM adds the caveat that Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. The line is included with an almost perceptible wink and an “oh, yeah.” Where is Ray McGovern seeing all this winking? Where is this heated debate that McGovern is following?
