"Obama knew what was at stake, not just the lives of those brave warriors, but literally the presidency," -- Biden, saying he suggested the OBL raid was "too risky" Link Send e-mail to Bart Half of US one crisis from poverty So
why elect a Cayman Islands president?
Link What does it mean to be poor? If it means living at or below the poverty line, then 46 million people qualify. But if it means living with a decent income and hardly any savings -- so that one piece of bad luck, one major financial blow, could land you in serious, lasting trouble -- then it's a much larger number. In fact, it's almost half the country. "The resources that people have -- they are using up those resources," said one advocacy group. "They're living off their savings. They're at the end of their rope." The group issued a report today examining so-called liquid asset poverty households -- the people who aren't living below the poverty line, but don't have enough money saved to weather an emergency. About 127.5 million people are liquid-asset poor. If they experience a sudden loss of income, caused, for example, by a layoff or a medical emergency, it will fall below the poverty line within three months. People in these households simply don't have enough cash to make it for very long in a crisis. It's possible that Obama has been working his ass off to create more jobs, but we haven't seen that. Apparently his staff has been telling him, "That's not important" and that could cost him a second term. When Clinton said, "I will focus like a laser beam on the economy," people knew he meant business, and then he delivered. Obama, meanwhile, has focused on dozens of other issues that few, if any, people carried about. (Does anyone think better mileage standards for cars was important in a crisis?) It's still Obama's race to lose, but he's stupidly made things harder on himself. If only Obama had an advisor with an IQ of 64... Send e-mail to Bart Catholics hate birth control Have 16 kids or find a new faith Link Catholic churches across the USA this weekend echoed with scorn for a new federal rule requiring faith-based employers to include birth control and other reproductive services in their health care coverage. Dozens of priests took the rare step of reading letters from the pulpit urging parishioners to reach out to Washington and oppose the rule, enacted this month. The rule requires nearly all employers to provide their employees access to health insurance that covers artificial contraception, sterilization services and the "morning after" birth control pill. Hey, if you can't handle being in the health care business, then get the hell out. Turn your hundreds of hospitals into book stores and sell whatever books you want. Subject: 2012 not like 2008 A lot of columnists have been comparing the Romney vs. Gingrich primary battle to the 2008 primary battle between Obama and Clinton. I don't think they are similar. In 2008 the Democrats had two strong candidates that they liked. People who wanted Hillary to win liked Obama too. People who liked Obama also liked Hillary. Both candidates were very popular. In contrast Republicans dislike both leading candidates. It's a battle between those who can't stand Romney more vs. those who can't stand Newt more. Republican have to choose between the guy who lost to the guy who lost to Obama vs. the guy who is going to make the third lady into the First Lady. I don't see the Republicans coming together behind any candidate this year. Marc Perkel Send e-mail to Bart Seeing the ads puts

Freeway Blogger's $1,000 Slogan Contest Link Just finished up my West Coast Tour, posting 120+ signs between Seattle and San Diego and looking forward to doing it again. This time I'd like to focus on climate change and am asking your help finding the right slogans. Slogans should be short, smart, fit well into a rectangle and look good in traffic. Winner gets a thousand dollars and has their message displayed alongside freeways up and down the west coast. Second and third place winners, if they're good enough for the freeways, will receive 500 and 250 dollars respectively and have their messages posted as well. Original work is preferred but not mandatory, and apart from the right to post them publicly, I will make no claim to winning entries as intellectual property. Send entries to freewayblogger - at - yahoo - dot - com. Deadline for submissions is March 15th. Send e-mail to Bart Marty

A restaurant in Knoxville, Tennessee refused to serve state Sen. Stacey Campfield, the bigot who sponsored the state’s “don’t say gay” bill, compared homosexuality to bestiality, and most recently told Michelangelo Signorile that it’s virtually impossible to spread HIV/AIDS through heterosexual sex. “I hope that Stacy Campfield now knows what if feels like to be unfairly discriminated against,” the Bistro at the Bijou wrote on its Facebook wall on Sunday. The restaurant has received an overwhelmingly positive response.
The

of CO2 as espoused by Gore, Hanson and the IPCC, is the biggest hoax of the century. Are you still interested in the truth? CC in FL I
sure am happy to hear that.
If the Earth's NOT getting hotter, that means the arctic ice is still there. It must be invisible, tho, because all the scientists can see is water. I'm sure the folks at Glacier National Park are happy, too. They've been under the liberal delusion that their glaciers are disappearing. Same for all those hundreds of millions of trees our West that've turned brown. It's great to know those tress are still green, and not dead and rotting like they seem. Same for the forest fires that are regularly 20 times bigger than they were 30 years ago. You can show me charts and more charts and then 100 charts that say ice isn't melting, but why are new over-the-North-pole shipping lanes opening up? And when you're on a cruise to Alaska and you see skyscraper-sized chunks of ice falling into the ocean, that's because there's no warming, right? I guess that also means Katrina was a hoax, and Joplin didn't really get wiped out. It also means the Marshall Islands aren't disappearing - that's good news. I feel better after reading your e-mail. iPad cuts into Windows PCs Link If Apple is to be believed, when it comes to the iPad, Microsoft has more to worry about than not fielding a strong tablet competitor. Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook claims that the iPad is stealing sales from Windows PCs. Apple reported its earning for the fiscal third quarter today, and the iPad was a big contributor to profit and revenue. The company sold 9.25 million iPads in the quarter, which was an increase of 183% over the third quarter last year. Cook said the iPad cannibalized some Mac sales, but the effect on PC sales was more serious. According to a live Forbes blog of the earnings call, here's what he had to say: "First as I said before I think there was some cannibalization of new Macs by iPads...it's clear that some customers chose to purchase an iPad instead of a new Mac, but what really excites us is more customers chose to buy an iPad than a Windows PC." More Murdoch Arrests
The scandal gets deeper for Mr. Republican Link On Saturday morning, the police arrested four journalists who have worked for Rupert Murdoch. For a while, it looked as though these were yet more arrests of people related to the News of the World but then it became clear that this was something much more significant. This may be the moment when the scandal that closed the NoW finally started to pose a potential threat to at least one of Murdoch's three other UK newspaper titles: the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times. The four men arrested on Saturday are not linked to the NoW. They come from the Sun, from the top of the tree – the current head of news and his crime editor, the former managing editor and deputy editor. Nothing is certain. No one has been convicted of anything. The four who were arrested on Saturday – like the 25 others before them – have not even been charged with any offence. But behind the scenes, something very significant has changed at News International. Maybe one of our British readers will give us some context on this? Send e-mail to Bart How cold is it?
