Non-partisan panel says they
liked itLink A nonpartisan, independent review of torture after 9-11 concludes that “it is indisputable that the US engaged in the practice of torture” and that Bush & Cheney bore responsibility for it. The sweeping, 577-page report says that while brutality has occurred in every American war, there never before had been “the kind of considered and detailed discussions that occurred after 9/11 directly involving a president and his top advisers on the wisdom, propriety and legality of inflicting pain and torment on some detainees in our custody.” Debate over torture used by the Bush Bastards has often broken down on largely partisan lines. The Constitution Project’s task force seeks to produce a stronger national consensus on torture. A separate 6,000-page CIA report remains classified. “As long as the debate continues, so too does the possibility that we could again engage in torture,” the report says. But why bother with this exercise is masturbation if we're going to "look forward?" Why investigate serious crimes of there's no punishment for the guilty? Subject: Boston Hi Bart, Thanks for giving everyone some relief from mainstream media. I think your guy in San Diego is dead on right about the bombing. It looks like a boy scout level of sophistication, to me at any rate. In materials and implementation. Leave a backpack so the cameras can see you? If it were foreign terrorists? So if not a suicide bomber? (unless he/she killed or injured): Seems that Big Brother would be able to find someone walking in the Back Bay just from the store cameras. Christian domination? I think more likely one of those sovereign citizens. Anti-gay? But if deflection from guns as a national topic and making the NRA freedom-loving heroes is the motive, and only secondarily attacking Bostonians for tolerance and/or liberals and/or gays, or... runners..., the longer someone is not caught the much more likely this is the case. Here in the burbs right around Boston, I made a point of going out last night to a burrito place around 8:30 PM to see if anyone was out at all, and if they were, what people were thinking or feeling. People were determined to live their lives, and not let anybody stop them. Sitting down to eat next to each other were young people, old people, college students, dark and light people, gay people, women together, and a family with 2 kids. The store employees were extra glad to see us. This morning at the coffee shop, the same. People in Boston are pretty much not letting anyone take our wonderful city away from us, or the country. And certainly not our burritos, Bart! best, mark Send Classic Lines to Bart Subject: raped girl's suicide Bart, I’ve got six kids, one daughter. If these little shits did this to my daughter they’d be (dealt with violently). And I might be tempted to take out their mothers and fathers as well for raising such useless, toxic, assholes. My five boys were all utterly appalled that any male could do that to a girl, then joke about it. I raised them right. Authorities should be looking at the competence of the parents of these mutant, useless predators as well. Jesus, I’m disgusted. Minnesota Steve There's another part of bullying that I don't get. When the 6'6" linebacker sees the 5'10" punk picking on a 98-pound weakling why doesn't the linebacker step in and say/do something? If they linebacker said, "Hey asshole, knock it off," the world would be a lot nice place to live in. Send e-mail to Bart WTF is up with North Korea? by Gary Leupp Link On March 27 Kim Jong-un severed the last military hotline between North and South. Three days later he announced that the DPRK was renouncing the armistice agreement of 1953 and “entering the state of war.” On April 2 he announced the reactivation of a plutonium reactor closed in 2007, and the closure of Kaesong Industrial Park the next day. (Pyongyang bravely declared that it receives “few economic benefits from the zone,” where 53,000 North Koreans work for 123 South Korean companies, “while the South side largely benefits from it.”) On April 4 U.S. intelligence reported movement of a medium-range missile to an eastern location for possible testing. The next day British and Russian diplomats reported that their missions in Pyongyang had been encouraged to evacuate family members. Two weeks have gone by. Pyongyang is reportedly calm, and there are some reports that the Pentagon seems to have canceled or postponed some actions, perhaps to defuse the situation. Everyone seems to agree that, since the North Koreans do not seem anywhere near to having deliverable nuclear warheads and it’s extremely unlikely that all the rhetoric and dramatic moves will truly lead to war. But how to explain them? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Pissed-orius He comes from such a rich family that if he ever does any jail time it will be a country club type of incarceration. M Lamont When Adam Scott won the Masters last Sunday, and became the first golfer from Australia to win that prestigious (cough) award, I told Mrs Bart, "All he's got to do is avoid killing his wife and he'll be Australia's hero for the rest of his life." Think of it - in 2050, he can walk into any bar in Australia and someone will offer to buy him a drink - IF he can avoid killing his wife. ...and speaking of major screw-ups, have you heard about Sam Hurd? Police say months after he signed a $5M contract with the Chicago Bears, undercover cops sold him a kilo of cocaine and he told the cops he would need a kilo per week from them - on video, of course. Why are men so stupid? Send e-mail to Bart Obama Negotiating with Himself
by Gene LyonsLink The great mystery of Barack Obama remains the extent to which he has ever believed his own rhetoric about a transformative, post-partisan presidency. Was it really possible, I asked early last year, “that Obama had mistaken the U.S. government for the Harvard Law Review, where the emollient balm of his personality persuaded rival factions to reason together?” No Chicago politician, I decided, could possibly be that naïve. And yet here we go again. With Mitt Romney in the rear-view mirror and congressional Republicans more intransigent than ever, Obama has been taking GOP senators out to dinner, while the White House has supposedly made party hardliners the proverbial budgetary offer they can’t refuse. Obama’s willingness to swap “reforms” in the way cost-of-living increases to Social Security benefits are calculated—the so-called “chained CPI”—in return for higher revenues from closing tax loopholes, has many liberals howling mad. And yet Republicans will almost certainly refuse it. This is a different point than what Gene was making, but what if that's WHY Obama did that? Obama offers to chop Social Security KNOWING the GOP will turn him down. Obama gets to say, "They won't listen to reason no matter what I offer them," which makes things better for us and much worse for the teabagging Republicans. Like Gene, I can't figure this president out. Sometimes he's a mouse, sometimes a cunning hun. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: yesterday's angry eagle Howdy Bartcop: I saw a similar pic of a golden eagle picking up and tossing a fox because it got too close to the eagle's freshly killed dinner. Eagles don't want to eat foxes - they taste terrible, I hear. ha ha As far as the sad but common practice of "slut-shaming" rape victims goes, it seems to me that a lot of women want to feel that it could never happen to them, so they're happy to say that the victim was dressed scantily, flirted, drank, deliberately was in a place she shouldn't have been, etc. That way they can say to themselves: "It'll never happen to me! I wasn't..." Take care, Rochelle Send e-mail to Bart Marty's

Yesterday, by a vote of 77 to 44, New Zealand became the 13th country on the planet to legalize same-sex marriage. In the face of strong lobbying by conservative and religious zealots predicting the end of civilization should Parliament vote in favor of same-sex marriage, MP Maurice Williamson took to the floor to instill a whole lot of common sense…and humor…into the debate. How good is this guy? Well, in response to a Catholic priest who had accused Williamson of supporting an unnatural act, the MP said, “I found that quite interesting coming from someone who has taken an oath of celibacy for his whole life.” Nice. The speech is brilliant and makes one wish that there was someone, anyone, in Congress who could express ideas half as well as this guy can. Send e-mail to Bart America's Rivers Run Dry I remember when they had water in them Link The Colorado River is the lifeblood of the American Southwest, providing drinking water for over 36 million people across seven states, irrigating 15 percent of our nation’s agriculture output, and supporting a $26 billion recreation economy. In fact, it is so important, that if the Colorado River were a company, it would be the 19th largest employer in the Fortune 500. And yet, the river is so dammed, diverted and over-tapped along its 1,400-mile course that it dries to a trickle before reaching the sea. This is why American Rivers named it the number one most endangered river in the country. As Americans, we are lucky to have this river in our proverbial backyard. It is one of the most recognized and visited rivers in the United States, with millions of people flocking to its banks each year. But a century of water management policies and practices promoting wasteful water use have put the river at a critical crossroads. Send e-mail to Bart Judge Rules for Lesbians B&B wrong to deny them a room Link A judge has ruled a Hawaii bed and breakfast violated the law when two women were denied a room because they're gay. The judge ruled in favor of a couple who sued Aloha Bed & Breakfast for discrimination in 2011. In 2007, Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford tried to book a room at the bed and breakfast because it's in Hawaii Kai, the same east Honolulu neighborhood where the friend they were visiting lived. When Cervelli specified they would need one bed, the owner asked if they were lesbians. Cervelli responded truthfully and the owner said she was uncomfortable having lesbians in her house because of her religious views, the lawsuit said. The bed and breakfast violated the state public accommodations law and is ordered to stop discriminating against same-sex couples, according to the ruling dated April 11. That law prohibits establishments that provide lodging to transient guests from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, race, color, ancestry, religion, disability and sex —including gender identity or expression. Jim Hochberg, a Honolulu attorney representing the gay haters said Monday the ruling doesn't consider her First Amendment rights. "The public needs to be aware of this decision because it has far-reaching consequences," he said. Yeah, next thing they'll force you to rent rooms to Jews and darkies.
