The Scandals are Falling Apart

The crucial ingredient for a scandal is the prospect of high-level White House involvement
and wide political repercussions. Government wrongdoing is boring. Scandals can bring down
presidents, decide elections and revive down-and-out political parties. Scandals can dominate
American politics for months at a time.
On Tuesday, it looked like we had three possible political scandals brewing. Two days later,
with much more evidence available, it doesn’t look like any of them will pan out. There’ll be
more hearings, and more bad press for Obama. But — and this is a key qualification — absent
more revelations, the scandals that could reach high don’t seem to include any real wrongdoing,
whereas the ones that include real wrongdoing don’t reach high enough.
Let’s go through them.
The good news is it seems Obama isn't involved in any of the wrong-doing.
The bad news?
If he knew about anything they'll call him Nixon.
If he didn't know about the wrongdoing on his watch they'll call him Reagan.
BTW, at the press conference, why didn't Obama say,
"If anyone broke the law they should be prosecuted."

The Scottish cardinal who resigned as archbishop after admitting to sexual misconduct
will leave Scotland for several months of prayer and atonement, the Vatican said Wednesday
in a rare sanction against a "prince of the church."
Yeah, it's rare that they get this type of harsh punishment.
Cardinal Keith O'Brien recused himself from the March conclave that elected Pope Francis
after a newspaper reported unnamed priests' allegations that he acted inappropriately toward them.
O'Brien subsequently acknowledged he had engaged in unspecified sexual misbehavior. He resigned
as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, apologized and promised to stay out of the church's public life.
The Vatican said O'Brien, once Britain's highest-ranking Catholic leader,
would leave Scotland for several months of "spiritual renewal, prayer and penance."
Boy, that'll teach him.
Why, next time he gets caught, they might sentence him to a YEAR of vacation.

I see lots of accusations here, but I can't find the beef.
More importantly, if there was any beef there, why didn't Hillary use it in 2008?
Was Hillary "too nice" to use the facts against Obama?
Was Hillary "too shy" to use the facts against Obama?
That's not the Hillary I know, so I must assume it's all bullshit.
Some people think if they write an article that repeats the names
Resko and Blagojevich over and over - something might stick.
Plus, if there's "all that evidence" why didn't McCain use it in 2008?
Why isn't FOX News using it right now?

These so called not for profit Tea Party groups deserved more scrutiny by the IRS,
not because they are Republican, but because 100% of them are in fact in violation of the law.
Tax exempt groups are supposed to be tax exempt because they are "charitable" or "social welfare
organizations". The organizations are supposed to be feeding the poor or the sick.
But that's not what they are doing. These Tea Party groups are laundering money so that
rich people can give campaign contributions to help candidates and deduct it from their taxes.
So saying that they are targeting the Tea Party is like accusing law enforcement of targeting
bank robbers. That's what they are supposed to do.

While few are defending the Internal Revenue Service for targeting some 300 conservative groups,
there are two critical pieces of context missing from the conventional wisdom on the “scandal.”
First, at least from what we know so far, the groups were not targeted in a political vendetta —
but rather were executing a makeshift enforcement test (an ugly one, mind you) for IRS employees
tasked with separating political groups not allowed to claim tax-exempt status, from bona fide social
welfare organizations. Employees are given almost zero official guidance on how to do that, so they
went after Tea Party groups because those seemed like they might be political. Keep in mind,
the commissioner of the IRS at the time was a Bush appointee.
This is not the first time such activity has occurred.
“I wish there was more GOP interest when I raised the same issue during the Bush administration,
where they audited a progressive church in my district in what look liked a very selective way,”
Rep. Adam Schiff said. “I found only one Republican that would join me in calling for an investigation
during the Bush administration. I’m glad now that the GOP has found interest in this issue and it ought
to be a bipartisan concern.”
