PO Box 54466 Tulsa, OK 74155 Link Liberal or conservative, intentionally or not, all sources of news contain some form of bias. Some use it as an explicit marketing tool, some attempt to remain objective, but all news sources cover the same story differently. Spectrum News Prism was designed to help explore stories across news sources. News sources are ranked across the spectrum of ideology, from liberal to conservative, literally left to right, providing an intuitive browsing tool to compare coverage between them. Does the story lead with the negative or bury it in the end? Do the editorial decisions and word choices reflect that news sources bias regarding the stories content? The only way to tell is to compare them in real time. Search for a single word, issue or name and scroll across the spectrum of coverage to compare real-time coverage across news sources. Quotes "The most gratuitous part of Shark Week is when the sharks try to convince the beachgoers not to sign up for Obamacare." -- LOLGOP Send e-mail to Bart Will NSA Kill U.S. Cloud Business? Link The issue of internet governance is about to become very contentious. Given what we now know about how the US and its satraps have been abusing their privileged position in the global infrastructure, the idea that the western powers can be allowed to continue to control it has become untenable. But the Snowden revelations also have implications for you and me. They tell us, for example, that no US-based internet company can be trusted to protect our privacy or data. The fact is that Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft are all integral components of the US cyber-surveillance system. Nothing, but nothing, that is stored in their "cloud" services can be guaranteed to be safe from surveillance or from illicit downloading by employees of the consultancies employed by the NSA. That means that if you're thinking of outsourcing your troublesome IT operations to, say, Google or Microsoft, then think again. I know a way to fix that: You can still put your music and videos and family photos and contracts and wills and all that non-terrorism stuff on the cloud, but then put all your bomb-making info and terror-related contacts on a flash drive where Obama can't read them. Subject: NSA Spying Bart, that story above - Does this make you think that maybe Snowden did a good thing? Or would you prefer "Ignorance is Bliss" ???? Steve So, my choices are to agree with you and be enlightened. or refuse to get outraged and set my hair on fire and be ignorant? Remember the Star Trek with Joan Collins, where the Enterprise ceased to exist because Kirk saved Ruby Keeler's life and that "butterfly effect" caused Ameruca to get into WWII late so history changed and Hitler won and there never was a Federation? Because Snowden took it on himself to start this THING into motion, history has changed. This is what your hero has accomplished so far: Obama's thinking about skipping that G12 thing in Moscow to snub Putin and we might boycott the upcoming Moscow Olympics and maybe Putin gets angry and triples aid to Syria and things spin out of control and we end up with a nuclear war - all because Snowden thought he saw a woodchuck. I don't think these gotta-be-famous Zimmerman types should be deciding America's future. But then, I'm ignorant. Will Snowden start a new Cold War? At least we hope the coming wat will stay cold Link Russia has given NSA secrets leaker Edward Snowden asylum for one year. Now what? The White House has a broad array of potential diplomatic tools to craft a response — but it’s not clear which ones would send a clear message of disapproval to Putin while not endangering areas of rare but crucial Russo-U.S. cooperation. With the White House announcement on Thursday that Obama might scrap a summit next month with Putin over the asylum decision, how likely is a further escalation of tensions? Simply put, are we heading into a new Cold War? “No, we’re not going into another Cold War,” a senior administration official told Yahoo News, requesting anonymity because nobody wants to say wheta everyone's thinking If things escalate, the official made clear, it’s not because of Snowden — at least, "not just because" of him. Illinois Gets Legal Pot They are the 20th state to make me jealous Link Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed one of the strictest medical marijuana laws in the nation Thursday, making the state the 20th to legalize the substance. The measure takes effect Jan. 1 and establishes a four-year pilot program for 60 state-run dispensaries and 22 "cultivation centers," under 24-hour surveillance, where marijuana plants will be grown. Doctors will be able to prescribe marijuana for more than 30 specific medical illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis, according to CBS Chicago. ''It's very important we do whatever we can to ease their pain,'' Gov. Quinn said. Too bad Obama can't say, ''It's very important we do whatever we can to ease their pain.' Oh, be COULD say that, but he doesn't have the courage to say it. He's rather be George Wallace, blocking the door to keep progress out. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: American Arrogance doesn't work Internationally The American government see the world as if there are 2 kinds of people, Americans and foreigners. What we don't seem to get is that we are only 5% of the world and the other 95% of the world doesn't like being treated as if they were second class humans. The very idea that we can spy on "foreigners" because they have no rights doesn't play well for the rest of the planet. The Internet is resilient and the rest of the world will start to reconfigure around USA spying. Business will move way from US based operations into countries that don't allow America to spy. This program will end up costing us trillions and America will no longer be dominate in the technology arena. And the spying creates yet another reason to inspire terrorists and in the long run will make us less safe. When Americans give up freedom, bin Laden wins. Marc Perkel is a Genius 68 Minute Video SFW I've known Marc Perkel for at least 15 years. I knew he was smart but I didn't know he was CRAZY smart. This video is a speech he gave to the Humanist Community Forum in Silicon Valley six weeks ago. The speech is titled Science is Now the New Bible and it just floored me. He seems to be teaching a room full of very smart people. Of course, with my IQ of 64, it's hard for me to grab all he was saying but I really, really enjoy hearing from people who are smarter than me. I didn't intend (or expect) to listen to the entire speech but once he got started I couldn't put it down. Give this speech a listen. If, after a few minutes, it's not working for you, fast-forward to the 20-minute mark or so. You won't ever think of Marc Perkel the same way again. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Snowden Bart, they say we should thank Edward Snowden for the opportunity to talk about the NSA and the security vs privacy debate. For all Trayvon knew, maybe Zimmerman was looking for his cat. 2) But was it for the heinous crime of looking at or even approaching his highness Trayvon? 3) Or maybe after he got knocked to the ground? 4) After his head was being slammed on the sidewalk? 5) Maybe when Trayvon went for the gun? If none of those, then when? Just curious, restrader You Republicans just kill me. You got everything you wanted and STILL you're not happy. The unarmed, worthless Black kid who went for candy was shot dead in the street. The armed martial arts guy who was hunting him got away with killing him. Send e-mail to Bart "I was cheated on Jeopardy!" Trebeck strong-arms kid for his spelling Link A Connecticut eighth-grader who misspelled the correct answer to a "Jeopardy!" question and lost money over it says he was cheated. Thomas Hurley III correctly answered the Final Jeopardy question about the Emancipation Proclamation But Thomas spelled it "emanciptation" and was ruled out by know-it-all host Alex Trebek. He bet $3,000 of his $9,600 in winnings and finished well behind a rival who amassed $66,600. "I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final 'Jeopardy!' question," he tsaid. "It was just a spelling error." In an email, producers of Jeopardy! defended Trebek's decision. "If 'Jeopardy!' were to give credit for an incorrect response (however minor), the show would effectively penalize the other players," they said. "We love crushing the souls of young people on our show." This came up a few years ago and I wrote about it. The correct Final Jeopardy answer was "Benjamin Franklin," but the kid wrote "Bejamin Franklin," and Trebeck delighted in crushing that kid, too. Send e-mail to Bart DEA Spying Worse than NSA Defendants railroaded thru secret spying Link A secretive DEA unit is funneling information from intelligence intercepts, wiretaps, informants and a massive database of telephone records to authorities across the nation to help them jail Americans. Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges. The documents show that federal agents are trained to "recreate" the investigative trail to effectively cover up where the information originated, a practice that some experts say violates a defendant's Constitutional right to a fair trial. If defendants don't know how an investigation began, they cannot know to ask to review potential sources of exculpatory evidence - information that could reveal entrapment, mistakes or biased witnesses. "I have never heard of anything like this at all," said Nancy Gertner, a Harvard Law School professor who served as a federal judge from 1994 to 2011. Gertner and other legal experts said the program sounds more troubling than recent disclosures that the NSA has been collecting domestic phone records. The NSA effort is geared toward stopping terrorists; the DEA program targets common criminals, primarily drug dealers. "It is one thing to create special rules for national security," Gertner said. "Ordinary crime is entirely different. It sounds like they are phonying up investigations." So how many people are rotting in prison because the government illegally put them there? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Women 4 Hillary Bart, With Republicans seemingly hell-bent on rolling back women’s rights and protections, how could the GOP candidate in 2016 have a chance against Hillary? I could see 75% of the women’s vote going to virtually any female Democrat, especially against the most admired woman in the world – for the past 11 years running. Hillary could deliver a crushing, humiliating defeat to Republicans in 2016 with overwhelming support from the largest voting block in the country - women. Dennis in DC Dennis, you're forgetting - these are Democrats. Wild guess 40 percent of Democrats fucking hate the Clintons with all their hearts. The minute Hillary announces, can't-stand-to-win Democrats will start screaming "Whitewater, Vince Foster and Mena Airport" like they did in 2008. Plus, you can depend on the media to do all they can to stop her.
