Quotes "GREEDY AND LAZY . . . A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE." -- Sylvester Stallone, pissed at Bruce Willis Story Send e-mail to Bart GOP Moderates vs The Baggers Boner's going to anger the base... Link Moderate Republican conservatives are beginning to foment a revolt of their own — a backlash to anti-spending tea party shrillness as budget cuts begin to significantly shrink defense and domestic programs. Tea party forces may have dominated the House GOP's approach to the budget so far, but pragmatists in the party have served notice they won't stand idly by for indiscriminate spending cuts to politically popular community development grants, education programs and even Amtrak. Voting for the tea party budget developed by Paul Ryan was one thing. But as long as a Democrat occupies the White House, Ryan's budget is little more than a nonbinding wish list — cutting Medicaid, Medicare and food stamps and slashing budgets for domestic agencies funded annually through appropriations bills. Many tenured Republicans have viewed Ryan's sweeping cuts as unworkable all along. When more than $4 billion in entirely new cuts came to the House floor, John Boehner confronted shaky support and pulled the $44 billion package on July 31. That sparked a frustrated outburst from the Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky. He called for abandoning the Ryan budget and starting bipartisan negotiations that would provide appropriators with "a realistic spending level to fund the government in a responsible — and attainable — way." Harold, guess what? You're in a party totally dominated by insane Teabaggers. You no longer get to use words like "realistic" and "responsible." Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Obama calls for NSA transparency It's kind of funny that Obama is calling for NSA transparency because that's just what Edward Snowden gave us. If Obama wants transparency about the NSA and PRISM programs he should let Snowden speak rather than trying to shut him up. Snowden is a patriot, a whistle blower, and a saint. Obama is the one who is breaking the law. a Reuters Exclusive Link Details of a DEA program that feeds tips to federal agents and then instructs them to alter the investigative trail were published in a manual used by IRS agents for two years. The practice of recreating the investigative trail, highly criticized by former prosecutors and defense lawyers after Reuters reported it this week, is now under review by the Justice Department. Two high-profile Republicans have also raised questions about the procedure. A 350-word entry in the Internal Revenue Manual instructed agents of the U.S. tax agency to omit any reference to tips supplied by the DEA's Special Operations Division, especially from affidavits, court proceedings or investigative files. The entry was published and posted online in 2005 and 2006, and was removed in early 2007. The IRS is among two dozen arms of the government working with the Special Operations Division, including the FBI, the NSA and the CIA. The GOP is Now Paralyzed by Elaine Isquith Link There was a time, about two summers ago, when Republicans in Congress opposed the president for a reason. The reason wasn’t exactly an honorable or stirring one, but at least it had a logic to it. The thinking, reportedly articulated by Paul Ryan among others, went a little something like this: Any grand bargain, no matter how tilted to the right wing, would only help Obama win reelection. But all-out intransigence, when paired with a weak economy and looming debt, would make Obama look ineffectual, weak, and in over his head. And that was the way back to 1600 Penn. But then Mitt Romney happened, and we all know how that went. ha ha Cut to yesterday, more than two years later, and depressingly little has changed. There Obama stands; still president, still trying, and still finding no serious partner with whom to bargain. But whereas the original grand bargain was truly sweeping in its ambitions, trading (too few) tax hikes for (too many) cuts to social insurance programs like Medicare and Social Security, this latest iteration of what some have called the president’s white whale is far more modest. And yet Republican resistance is even firmer. Pigboy and FOX News will not allow any sanity to spread in the GOP. Republicans don't get that Pigboy and FOX are here to fleece money from the extra-stupid. They're not about changing America or winning elections. For them, it's greed, pure and simple and they're not giving up those extra millions. Subject: crazy Neil True, sometimes political disputes in Oklahoma are settled with ammonium nitrate. Besides, if I used my real name, unstable types (cough) might say I was seeking fame. Send e-mail to Bart Snowden's ISP Goes Dark Founder says Feds involved in 'crimes' Link The email service used by Snowden abruptly shut down on Thursday after its owner cryptically announced his refusal to become "complicit in crimes against the American people." Lavabit, an email service, is no more, apparently after rejecting a court order for cooperation with the Feds to participate in surveillance on its customers. It is the first such company known to have closed rather than comply with government surveillance. Silent Circle, another provider of secure online services, announced on later Thursday night that it would scrap its own encrypted email offering, Silent Mail. The founder of Lavabait, Ladar Levison, wrote on the company's website: "I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit." Hmmmmmm. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Sanjay Gupta Apologizes For 'Misleading' Public About Weed Think Obama would still want him for surgeon general after this about face on weed? Crazy Chris From Boca Send e-mail to Bart Man-on-Dog Eyes 2016 Please God, make 'Frothy' run again Link Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Hope this helps Send e-mail to Bart Dr. Sanjay Gupta: I Endorse Pot He used to think like Obama... Link CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta is reversing his position on medical marijuana and now endorses its use in a new essay and upcoming documentary. "We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that," Gupta, who penned an article for Time in 2009 titled "Why I Would Vote No on Pot," writes for CNN.com. "I didn't look hard enough, until now. I didn't look far enough. ... I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis. For his film, titled simply Weed, Gupta writes that he spoke to "medical leaders, experts, growers and patients" around the world. In a departure from the DEA's view on marijuana, Gupta now believes that "it doesn't have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works." So far he's got everything right. He cites research estimating that 9 to 10 percent of adult marijuana users become dependent, as compared to 20 percent of cocaine users, 25 percent of heroin users and 30 percent of tobacco users. What the F is he talking about? You can't get medically addicted to pot UNLESS it does such a great job of killing pain that you just can't live without it, but isn't that also true of asprin and Tylenol? And he's saying ONLY 25% of heroin users become addicted? If they're doing it right, that number is waaaaay too low. Methinks the doctor wants to sell his film Weeds. That doesn't mean you can make shit up, Doc.
