Subject: Driving Miss Hillary
Bart, I agree with a lot of what you think, and love the cartoons, but I don’t see how you can
win the argument about your picture of Obama as Hillary’s chauffeur. I didn’t see the movie either,
but your photo clearly places Obama, a successful black man, in the role of chauffeur, not exactly
something most people aspire to become when they grow up.
He's smiling - does that count?
Additionally, Obama’s passenger is Hillary, one of the leading Democratic candidates.
Maybe you could argue Obama is driving Hillary to different positions, but that’d be a big stretch.
Overall, the picture simply harkens back to a more racist time and you putting current faces on it
just brings that attitude to the here and now.
How does it do that?
Couldn't someone look at any picture and say, "That harkens, too?"
The only way to play it safe would be to reject all toons depicting black people,
but that would leave me open to racism charges of another nature.
Your argument about black cab drivers is also disingenuous.
A hired chauffer is very different than a random cab driver.
That seems to be a point for my side. A cab you take for a few minutes of your life.
If you permanantly hire a black man, that would indicate to me you were not racist.
However, it’s not really worth losing sleep (or readers) over, keep swinging!
Erik
I wish more people could disagree like you did.
