"Hey rest of the United States, gay marriage is like color tv - eventually everybody's gonna get it." -- Bill Maher, in a tweet Send e-mail to Bart The
Attack on the Middle Class
by Al Franken, THE anti-rape senator Link The American middle class is in trouble. Median family income is down. Jobs are scarce. Opportunities people thought they'd earned through hard work are disappearing before their eyes. Working families are falling further and further behind. And that means it's hard for progressives not to feel like we're losing, too. Our movement is about putting the concerns of those working Americans at the forefront of our national agenda. Now, you can argue that Democrats in Congress should be doing more to win legislative battles - although, as someone who is in the room every day, I can tell you that I don't doubt for a second my colleagues' (proper use) commitment to moving our country in the right direction. (They're just too afraid to fight for it.) And you can argue that the Democratic Party should be using different tactics to win elections. But the fact remains: We as a progressive movement are losing the argument. On issue after issue, we're playing defense. Send e-mail to Bart Shopping online?

Quotes "I oppose efforts to restrict the ability of responsible adults to gamble online, and I have voted against such efforts many times. I am also a cosponsor of H.R. 1174, which would legalize and regulate online interstate gambling, including games of skill such as poker. This bill provides a reasonable solution that permits responsible adults to make their own decisions while ensuring that there are adequate safeguards to restrict access to children and those with gambling addictions." -- attributed to Rep. Herman L. Berman, Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee I like this guy... He stands for freedom! Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Cut Afghanistan not Medicare In the battle over the budget Republicans are calling for cutting Medicare and Social Security which in the long run is going to end up with our old people dying in poverty on the streets like they used to before we had those programs. What they should cut instead is Iraq and Afghanistan. Those wars are wasting 2 billion dollars a week and accomplishing nothing. Bin Laden is dead. Mission Accomplished. Bring all the troops home now and add the 2 billion a week to shore up Medicare and Social Security. Wars aren't free. Someone has to pay from them. We need that money here. Time to put Americans first. Throwing the elderly under the bus to pay for wars we never should have fought is just plain wrong. Marc Perkel When I was growing up, the talk was always about Guns vs Butter. Seems like we always have plenty of money for guns, never enough for butter. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: your recent Yahoo rant... Bro; Horacy Zachary just turned me on to a couple of yahoo clips of you ranting about yahoo, and the overall whoring out of things.. do not think for 1 second that there are not a billion others out there thinking "fuckin A-ray" at those comments. as usual, you are spot-on. the only fix for this that I see is for a substantial number of us to push away and just unplug, but...don't hold your breath. rock on, bart! oh, and my complements to you for your excellence in cussing... nobody can throw a cuss fit like you. well-applied, and not gratuitous... it's an art. skip Skip, thanks for that. And shame on Yahoo for being in the prostitute business. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Bart, you're right The apostrophe goes outside the s only if the noun is plural. Gates, as a person is singular so it is Gates's, but if you were talking about the family Gates it would be Gates'. "Robert Gates's pony is brown", as opposed to "The Gates' house is brown." I admit I wasn't sure, but I looked it up. Bill Bill is correct! Subject: Strunk and White's Elements of Style You're right about the singular possessive. Tell the others to read Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. Evidently they need it. I hate to see someone who's right having to fight a battle all alone. Keep up the good work. Sans Fers Subject: rules for the possessive case Hey Bart, Although I definitely read the site for the scathing political commentary I also found all this bullshit about possessive cases and names quite interesting. I always thought in the case of names that BOTH forms were correct; because, as you pointed out, colloquialisms can sometimes change convention. But in the email Yvette sent you this jumped out at me: "The possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding ’s {driver’s seat} {engineer’s opinion}." "The possessive of a plural noun that ends in s or es is formed by adding an apostrophe { parents’ house} { foxes’ den}." So, that would mean you were most definitely correct. Kai Subject: Gates' nonsense Bart, what's it like being right all the time? AL in MS It's brutal. Send e-mail to Bart Smokers Jersey causes problem Why can't everybody just chill? Link In case you can't spot it, the Rays have removed the cigar from under "Smokers," causing some consternation from the old-timers in Florida It's like people have nothing better to do than walk around, fucking things up. I say you wear the old jerseys, as is. If you do, some kid will ask, "Why do our uniforms have cigars on them?" And coach can say, "Because fifty years ago, we were ignorant about smoking. Today we know smoking kills, but that's part of the history of this team." See how easy that was? You tell the truth - you state the facts. Same for Tom Sawyer and the N word. You sit the class down, you tell them, "We're about to read a great book that was written back when Moses was still in short pants. It was a different time then - and attitudes have changed." Explain to those kids, "There was a time when we were so ignorant, we sold Black people like we sold cattle and horses - THAT'S how stupid America once was." Why not teach the kids the truth - age appropriate, of course. Rethugs want to go back to the "golden days of yesteryear." Let's teach today's kids why that's a bad idea. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Clinton worship Bart Sometimes your love and loyalty to the Clintons really makes me sad. That unquestioning worship is the reason I took a break from your site and canceled my radio subscription a few years ago. There's always a reason to cancel a sunscription or to withhold a donation. I express maybe 140 opinions a day, and that gets me in trouble. Do you get that I can't possibly agree with you 140 times in a row each issue? And even if I did, I could say something the next day to anger you, meaning we could agree 279 times out of 280 and still, you'd have a reason to unsubscribe. As far as I am concerned Robert Scheer has contributed much to the political discussion over the years and has tried to shine a light on injustice. As someone who has had his boots on the ground in a variety of places in order to give us firsthand accounts I believe he deserves much more respect than you have shown him. I believe you are being illogical. What we both read is this: What I DID learn, in just two paragraphs is: Clinton doesn't have the brains to grasp the real problem. It's so obvious, because of his overt temerity. Clinton was actually working for the Republicans even tho they hated him enough to impeach him, Clinton is alleged to have pushed policies that "created damage" Clinton is just like Hoover, who was the very worst of the very worst, Clinton has the effrontery to revive his '92 mantra Clinton has no sense of irony Clinton loves to wallow in the messes he made without taking blame Did I miss anything in those first two paragraphs? ...and you see MY bias, but not Sheer's? That's kinda amazing... I have noticed that you become the most upset when the Clintons are criticized and I really wish you would be more open minded and realize that Bill and Hilary are not the shining beacons of liberalism that you think they are. Have you learned nothing from Mike Malloy? This is just my opinion so go ahead and rip into me too. Maria S Maria, no reason to rip into you - you're just wrong. When I say, "Name a better, modern president - go ahead - NAME him," people see, "OH, Bart's unconditional love for the Clintons has clouded his mind." The fact that YOU can't name a better modern president tells me I'm right. BTW, what, besides everything, do I need to learn from Mike Malloy? Send e-mail to Bart Top Ten Dying Industries Don't choose a career that's dying... Link Wired phones, that makes sense News from Dead Trees, Duh! clothing and textiles, it's cheaper from China. 1-Hour photo shop, Duh! Record stores, video rentals, why drive when you can click? Bottom line - the Internet changed everything. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: possessives Bart, I don't really know who is right or wrong in this, I haven't followed that closely... But, according to Strunk & White's "Elements of Style", the possessive of Gates is Gates's. You are correct, Sir! When I was taking High School English back in the 1960s, Strunk & White (Page 3) was the definitive reference. As far as I am concerned, it still is. John S John, you and Strunk are correct! Strunk...Strunk... is that a Catholic name? ...I think we're done here. Send e-mail to Bart The newest sticker is in! Spiderman in Poker Trouble I knew he played, who knew he was good? Link The article says some rich guy lost a bundle in a Hollowood poker game, then filed bankruptcy and told the trustee where he lost some of his money. Now the court wants Spiderman to cough up $300K in winnings. That's not right. Subject: visiting hottie and mystery pages BC, does it help when I click on the Mystery pages and the Hottie pages? Yes, it helps a lot. Mystery pages and Hotties put food on my family. I just went through all the hotties for today and will continue to do so in the future. Not only do I get to look at pretty women, but the photography is also top notch. It took less than 5 minutes to go through 110 pages. Dude, thanks for that. That's like having 110 friends visit bartcop.com While money may be tight, I do have an easy five minutes a day for something that is also easy on the eyes. I figure this should help you - checking out your daily hottie pictures. I wonder if your readers know that? I believe you have many readers that would gladly go through this process if they knew it would help you and cost them nothing but a few minutes per day. I think everyone likes looking at a pretty girl and/or solving mysteries. You may have stated this in the past but I either missed those days or did not pick up on your message. Please let me and other know. Tom Tom, every look at a sub-page helps - thanks for spreading the word. Send e-mail to Bart I can fix the economy - RIGHT NOW It's called The Bartcop Tax Plan... Link Subject: Ignoring the past doesn't change history I don't understand this political farce the Republicans are pulling where they are pretending to care about the national debt. We are in the middle of the Bush recession. They are the ones who caused this mess and now they are holding America hostage over a situation they created. As much as Republicans want to pretend that history was different reality prevents history from being changed. What happened happened and now we have to pay the price. I think it's time we start talking about the Bush recession and figure out what we are going to do to get out of it. Marc Perkel Send e-mail to Bart After a much needed rest stop with the friendly folks at Mieir's Roadhouse, I got back on the road about 2 a.m. and saw another beautiful sunrise somewhere between Paxson and Glennallen. That would be an amazing coincidence; the president couldn't be that manipulative and cynical could he? Scott in Arizonastan Of course not, and last week's discovery "Gays should have equal rights, too," which means he's catching up to Dick Cheney and Ted Olson on human rights, just in time for those same 2012 elections - when Obama really needs his base.
