It's illegal to trade with terrorist nations Link Businesses owned by the Koch Brothers made illegal payments to win foreign contracts, Bloomberg magazine reports. In addition, foreign subsidiaries belonging to Koch Industries sold millions in petrochemical equipment to an Iranian methanol plant. In September 2008, a team of Koch researchers went to its subsidiary in France and "found evidence of improper payments to secure contracts in six countries dating back to 2002. The Koch bastards were reportedly none too pleased when the allegations came to light internally. Instead of recognizing the work of the ethics compliance officer--the company fired her. I'm sure Obama will want to "look forward" and not punish his enemies for their global crimes. After all, it's not like they were playing poker or smoking pot. Send e-mail to Bart Shopping online?

China warns America: Says US currency bill would have 'repercussions' Link China stepped up its criticism Tuesday of a proposed U.S. law to punish countries with artificially low currencies, saying there would be serious repercussions for the US/China economies if it is passed. The criticism comes after U.S. senators voted Monday to open a week of debate on the bill that would allow the government to impose additional duties on products from countries that subsidize exports by undervaluing their currencies. How worried China is about the proposed law can be seen by the fact that the Foreign Ministry, the Commerce Ministry and central bank all issued statements denouncing it. But the legislation faces considerable hurdles before it becomes law. The Obama White House, while agreeing that China's currency, the yuan, is undervalued, has been wary of unilateral sanctions against the Beijing government. If we have a trade war with China, does that mean we don't have to repay our loans to them? If we have a trade war with China, doesn't that mean Wal-Mart, the nations largest employer, might go out of business and create a bigger jobs problem? If we have a trade war with China, doesn't that mean inflation would suddenly go crazy because cheap China products would no longer be available? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: I knew it! New laws won't let Democrats vote in many states Link According to a new report, over five million voters could be denied the right to vote under new laws adopted in a dozen states. The study released Sunday night by the Brennan Center for Justice in New York said that new laws regarding photo identification requirements for voting, eliminating same day voter registration in several states, requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, changing requirements for voter registration drives, reducing early voting days and restoring the right to vote for convicted felons will make voting harder for the five million people in the 2012 election. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Killing Awlaki Bart, you wrote, > "I'm OK with it. > That cowardly prick was training weak-minded sheep to kill Americans." The essence of the argument against the assassination is that your assertion has never been proven in a court. Does this mean you are OK with Obama ordering the death of anyone without giving any proof that person has sinned to the degree that he deserves to be murdered? Or is it your contention that frightening Americans is now a capital, trial-free, offence? Don't you think that there are enough evidence-free conclusions being spouted by maniacs? Perhaps the POTUS should not be adding to this trend, particularly since he has the juice to carry out his death threats. Doug To me, it's the difference between Obama and Bush. I'm sure Obama didn't giggle when he signed the Awlaki death order. I'm sure Obama has never masturbated to Gitmo torture. For sure, Obama never held the record for most Western Hemisphere murders. Obama takes the C-in-C thing seriously - it's one of his only successes. Look at it this way: If you and I were pinned down behind a rock in Afghanistan and Awlaki was shooting at us, would you want a trial for the bastard or would you shoot him yourself, given the chance? Tell me you understand you're in the minority here (which certainly doesn't make you wrong) and we'll agree to disagree on this point. Send e-mail to Bart The

He (who?) said it was a political mistake, like Hitler playing golf with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu." -- Hank Williams Jr, who hates Black people and he don't care who knows it, Link Send e-mail to Bart Ah, to be Young and in Hate by Ted Rall Link Enraged young people," The New York Times worries aloud, are kicking off the dust of phony democracy, in which "the job of a citizen was limited to occasional trips to the polling places to vote" while decision-making remains in the claws of a rarified elite of overpaid corporate executives and their corrupt pet politicians. "From South Asia to the heartland of Europe and now even to Wall Street," the paper continues, "these protesters share something else: wariness, even contempt, toward traditional politicians and the democratic political process they preside over. They are taking to the streets, in part, because they have little faith in the ballot box." The rage of the young is real. It is justified. It is just beginning to play out. The political class thinks it can ignore the people it purports to represent. They're right-but not forever. A reckoning is at hand. Forty years of elections without politics will cost them. Have you noticed we haven't had a fund-raiser for a long
time?Link Send e-mail to Bart Quotes "Every time I put up a new blog entry about fundraising, what basically happens is that the same people who have already donated two or three or more times during this cycle dig down into their sofa cushions and kick in another five or ten dollars. That's great and I really appreciate it, but what I REALLY want is to get the folks who haven't donated yet (and who can AFFORD to!) to open up their wallets." -- Jeff Tiedrich, fundraiser for smirkingchimp.com Seems like every site I visit has a plea for money and I know you're tired of it. The worst part is not knowing when this money drought will end. Some people say we're right in the middle of this - that it'll be three more years before jobs start coming back - how do people survive? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: credit unions Bart; It is time to tell the folks about credit unions. Essentially they are banks, but I think they have different rules. I was tired of having my checks held so that I could run up large overdraft fees. Now I bank with the credit union-any can join one. Here is a list of the good stuff. I pay no fees at other credit union bankcard machines I pay no fees at 7-11 machines My ss and pension checks are made available as soon as the credit union receives them No hidden fees Access to online banking, loans and if you want, they have an investment counselor Everyone should get out of those big banks and join a credit union. You can call any time of day or night and get a person on the phone to discuss an online problem in my credit union Thanks; Judy Send e-mail to Bart The Slippery Slope of Assassinations by Ivan Eland at consortiumnews.com Link The execution of a potentially innocent Troy Davis last month justifiably horrified many in the United States and around the world. The case has led to important questions about whether the state should or is competent to kill its own citizens, no matter what heinous crime they are accused of committing. Yet at least Troy Davis got due process (however flawed), as the Fifth Amendment requires, before being executed. In contrast, there has been no similar outrage that Anwar al-Awlaki, also a U.S. citizen, has been put on a U.S. government assassination list with no due process. That’s because the word “terrorist” has been applied to al-Awlaki, meaning that hysteria reigns at the expense of any constitutional due process. The Fifth Amendment guarantees that a person (you don’t even have to be a U.S. citizen to get this protection) cannot be “deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” Of course, the proponents of a “war on terror” argue that in wars, the government doesn’t try every enemy soldier in a court of law before it attempts to kill them. However, since no war has been declared, even against the perpetrators of 9/11, that excuse shouldn’t apply. I respect Eland but his argument seems a little silly. He's against "assassinations," but he'd be OK if congress had declared war against the idea of terror? How can we declare war against an idea? There's a huge difference between Troy Davis - who didn't need to die right away - and some handjob in Yemen who puts bombs in packages to be shipped on American planes. Boo Hoo - the bomber of American airliners didn't get his Fifth Amendment rights? Fuck him. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Paris Hilton and Michael Jackson Bart, it's easy to hate Paris. She's your basic rich-bitch who got even richer doing an asinine reality show. So why not hate Kim Kardashian and Snooki as much as Paris? And how is an asinine reality show any worse than an asinine sit-com or an asinine soap opera? I don't hate her myself. I just try to ignore her. She's not terribly attractive. I'm not asking anyone to fall in love - I'm just curious about the hate. She was the most hated woman in America until Casey Anthony came along. As for Jackson's doctor, I doubt that the outcome would have been different with someone else. When a sad little man like Michael Jackson decides he wants to die, doctors are no obstacle. Why in the world do you say he wanted to die? Police ruled his death a homicide. He could have gotten the drugs anywhere. He started down this road when he decided to look like a bleached Diana Ross. Steve in MT Steve, my good friend, have you gone into the mind-reading business? You seem to assign sinister motives to his quirks. Let me ask: If you were a Black man with vitiligo, would you prefer to have zebra skin or would you want a consistent skin color? Note: I have the trial on in the background. They say MJ's killer had Propofol sent to his girlfriend's house. Note: My attorney also represents the Michael Jackson Estate but that has not "colored" my opinions about Michael Jackson. It was harder to get used to sitting in the "wrong" side of the car. But then your question could be turned around - by sitting on the right, you always have your dominant hand on the steering wheel - arguably more important than the radio, etc... BTW, that is pretty much a british thing (australia too I think) as most of Europe has cars and roads similar to ours.
